DJI Phantom 3 Advanced Review

The DJI Phantom 3 comes in two models, the Advanced and the Professional. The only real difference between the two models is that the Professional comes with a 4K camera and the Advanced comes with a 1080p camera. We will be reviewing the Advanced model in this article.

At first glance, the DJI Phantom 3 resembles the 2 Vision+, which was a great drone for aerial photography in and of itself, but the Phantom 3 is so much more!

Phantom 3 Advanced Controller

One of the most noticeable changes is the controller. The controller for the Vision+ was clunky and required you to take a hand off the controller to tap on your smartphone’s screen in order to change camera settings. The new controller has a sleeker design with a few extra buttons that allows you to operate the camera directly from the controller itself.

The remote also has a Return to Home button situated prominently next to the power button. Should you lose sight of the Phantom 3, the button will trigger the robot to return to its launch site and come in for a slow landing.

Some other improvements to the controller include a completely integrated control for the Advanced, including Wi-Fi. You can attach your smartphone or tablet directly to the controller through the USB connection. The controller now also has an internal rechargeable battery rather than the previous replaceable batteries. So, no more toting around a bunch of batteries! Plus, the charger that comes with the Advanced will charge both the robot and the controller at the same time.

Phantom 3 Advanced Hardware

Advancements have also been made in the actual hardware of the Phantom 3 as well. The flight stability and braking has been improved with the addition of a new motor tilt. The brushless motors have the power and precision needed for an excellent flight experience. The Phantom 3 has the ability to speed up, move up and down quickly and still stop immediately. The powerful air braking system allows the Phantom 3 to stop immediately upon command or when the controls are released, which will put the drone into hover mode.

The Phantom 3 is always completely aware of it location and its location in relation to you. This is made possible through GPS and GLONASS. GLONASS is similar to GPS, but with GLONASS the robot is connected to a minimum of 36 satellites at any time, no matter where in the world you are. Because of this technology, the Phantom 3 is able to hover and move more precisely. Plus, the Phantom 3 is able to use the input from all sensors to make complex calculations in real time. It literally helps you fly it!

The Phantom 3 also has a flight log that automatically records all the details of every flight in its memory so you can always go back and check flight details, such as flight route, time, distance, location and cached images of any photos or video taken. This information can also be sent to the DJI support team if needed.

Even the battery is intelligent! The new and upgraded battery boasts a higher voltage, more energy and greater power. Built-in sensors and bright LEDs keep you informed in real time the status and remaining power of the battery. Plus, the Phantom 3 automatically calculates the power needed to return to you from its current location and if the battery power dips below the amount needed, it will automatically return and land.

The improvements made on the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced make the Phantom 3 a superior choice in drones for the beginner or advanced user.
